Primary Grades

People of all ages, including children, can participate in meaningful reconciliation activities by learning about reconciliation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, learning about the history of Canada from a variety of viewpoints, and learning about fun and engaging ways to get involved. Resources for Primary Grades (K - 6) may include those that teach about Indigenous history and culture, aim to broaden perspectives, and encourage critical thinking. 

Here are some ideas for teaching Primary Grades (K - 6) about justice and fairness for First Nations young people:

• Learn about important issues for First Nations children and young people through:
  • Spirit's Bears books and learning guides;
  • Caring Society videos;
  • Project of Heart. 
• Organize a Have a Heart Day party in the classroom and send Valentine's.
• Bring teddy bears to school or daycare for Bear Witness Day.
• Have a teddy bear tea party!
• Make hearts and plant a heart garden for Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams.
• Create a Shannen's Dream club and participate in annual events like School is a Time for Dreams.
• Host a Reconciliation Ambearrister to learn about and participate in reconciliation for the school year.
