My name is Taylor Nicholls, from Wahnapitae First Nation, and I am completing a Master’s of Science in Biology at Laurentian University. My project investigates environmental contaminant levels in key subsistence fish species from lakes in my Community, providing valuable data for subsistence fishers. I have long been involved in my Community, volunteering with our walleye micro-hatchery program and recently managing and coaching the under 7 tykes hockey team in the Little Native Hockey League tournament. Beyond working closely with my Community, I am also part of Laurentian University’s Environmental Sustainability Committee and Nature Positive team. I joined the committee to add an Indigenous voice and point of view in Laurentian's environmental sustainability efforts and to help facilitate relationship building between the committee and Indigenous communities and partners around Sudbury. My pay-it-forward contribution is to continue volunteering with programs like these, but also to hopefully incorporate my research findings and knowledge into the youth educational component of the fish hatchery.
