Growing up on Fort William First Nation, my childhood was rooted in family, sports, and my
Anishinaabe culture. I spent a lot of my childhood playing hockey and spending time with my
grandfather, which are my favourite memories to look back on today. After graduating from high-
school, I moved to New Brunswick to study Geology, and moved back home after three years. I
then lived in Alberta for two years with my now husband, and we both moved back home to
Thunder Bay again in 2020 before my first daughter was born. It was becoming a mother that made
me want to finish school and pursue a career as a Registered Nurse, where I could make a positive
change in healthcare for my community. I am now set to graduate from Lakehead University in
Spring 2026, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. My ambition as a mature student to
achieve my academic goals stems from being a mother wanting a better future for myself and my
children. With my degree I am eager to make positive impacts while advocating for change to
better the health and wellbeing of our Indigenous communities.
