The intersection of child welfare investigations and public housing in Ontario

This information sheet from the Child Welfare Research Portal uses data from the Ontario Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect, 2013 (OIS-2013) to examine the incidence of child maltreatment investigations in Ontario in which the families under investigation were living in public housing. The authors explore the intersection of child welfare investigations and poverty over time, using public housing as a measure of poverty. The findings demonstrate that poverty has remained a consistent issue for families involved in the child welfare system. The information sheet also provides background information on the factors that influence rates of investigated child maltreatment over time, and explains the methodology and limitations of the Ontario Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect.
