Natasha and Britanny are proud members of the Aboriginal Student community at their school in British Columbia. They are actively involved in their school and community and known to be “amazing” passionate and hardworking students. Both have suffered losses in their lives and have overcome these by being actively engaged in creating awareness.
Their interest and passion reached new heights after joining their school’s Social Justice Class. They learned about social justice and became strong advocates for change. Their teacher explains that “the confidence that has developed and their sense of pride in the community is not something that can be measured” and there is nothing “that I could have taught them that would match what they have taught me and others with their presentation.” Not only did they complete thorough research but they also had the opportunity to attend a conference in Vancouver and became living witnesses to what they learned through their class and research. Natasha and Britanny completed a project entitled “Impact of Residential Schools on the Aboriginal communities-Truth and Reconciliation.” Through the project, they provided a passionate and informative collective of information based on research and personal experience. They have used the information and their passion to educate classes, conferences and school boards. Some of their presentations have been at the Aboriginal Youth conference and Langley School Board. Their presentation has been described by other students as “from the heart and made so many people cry, it was amazing.” Natasha and Britanny have been invited to address the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation Annual General Meeting in March 2014.
