Boozhoo! My name is Jaimey Jacobs, I am Ojibwe and a band member of Walpole Island First Nation. I am a first-year medical student at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at Western University. I am driven by my passions for advocating for Indigenous healthcare rights and increasing Indigenous representation within the healthcare system through removing barriers to education. As such, I have taken on various roles within my community, including serving as the Youth Program Assistant at the Bkejwanong Youth Facility, where I mentored Indigenous youth. I also worked as a volunteer tutor at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, supporting Indigenous youth both academically and emotionally. Additionally, I volunteer at the Southwestern Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre to help combat food insecurity and support mental health initiatives. At school, I am involved in the Global Health Committee as a Local Officer of Indigenous Health, the Western Emergency Medicine Interest Group, the Schulich ACCESS Mentorship Program, and the Schulich Teddy Bear Hospital Initiative. These roles allow me to advocate for Indigenous healthcare needs, support aspiring medical students, and empower various patient populations. I am on a journey to create a healthcare system that is safe and accessible for Indigenous patients. As such, I plan to pay it forward by creating a guidebook that aims to help Indigenous students navigate the path to becoming a healthcare professional. In conclusion, I am extremely thankful to be one of the 2024 Shannen’s Dream Scholarship recipients and I am honored to pay the kindness forward to help more Indigenous students access education.
