(Group of children aged 0-12)

The Grade 5 cohort of Shortreed Elementary school have been learning about residential schools and intergenerational traumas in both a historical and a contemporary context. Students visited St. Mary's Indian Residential School in Mission, BC and their personal reflections showed significant perspective shifts among the students.

The class created a video for Orange Shirt Day that was shared during a school assembly that honoured the lives of Indigenous students who were impacted by residential schools, as well as shared the ways they were committing individually to reconciliation.

When their teacher taught the students about an Indigenous grandfather and his granddaughter who were discriminated against at a Vancouver bank in 2019, the students wrote heartfelt letters and made cards in support of the family.
