Boozhoo! My name is Drea Sinclair and I am from Kinonjeoshtegon First Nation. I am starting
my Master of Social Work program at Lakehead University in September 2026 and am beyond
excited to be continuing my education and to be a recipient of the Shannen’s Dream
Scholarship. I am passionate about First Nations mental health, advocating for mental health
services in Northern remote communities, and suicide prevention. I am also very passionate
about supporting Indigenous youth through education, culture, and language. I plan to conduct
research to make mental health services and cultural knowledge more accessible in remote
communities as a protective factor against suicide for Indigenous youth. Suicide has affected
my life, as I have lost three friends to suicide, and I wish to honour them by working towards
helping those who struggle with mental health and addictions, especially in remote communities
where accessibility is limited. I also wish to continue my education and obtain a PhD in Social
Work, not only to support Indigenous communities with my education, but to be a role model for
Indigenous youth. I have overcome many obstacles, barriers, and challenges and want the
youth to know that they can do anything because of their resilience and strength. My hope for
the pay-it-forward contribution is to share Shannen’s story with the youth in the community
where I will be conducting research and encourage those interested in post-secondary
education to pursue their academic endeavours. Miigwetch!
