Pamela Angees is an Anishininew mother of two from Wunnumin Lake First Nation located in Treaty 9 territory. Her spirit name is Gishigo Bineshiish which means Beyond the Sky Bird. Her childhood dream is to be a medical doctor so that she can help improve First Nations health. As part of her journey into medicine, her resilience and determination helped overcome several barriers to graduate with an Honours Bachelor in Kinesiology, a Graduate Diploma in Professional Kinesiology, and a Master’s in Public Health. Pamela is now in her second year of the Doctor of Medicine program at the University of Manitoba. She attributes her success in medicine to a strong devotion to her family, her community, and her people. She holds a strong belief in a wholistic approach for a First Nations health system based on traditional governance as taught by her elders. Her passion in medicine has developed into decreasing the disparity gap in health outcomes between Indigenous children and non-Indigenous children. These disparities are rooted in a complex interplay of historical, social, and economic factors that include colonialism, intergenerational trauma, poverty, and systemic racism. This will be her focus after she completes her medical training.
