Our Dreams Matter Too: First Nations children’s rights, lives, and education. An alternate report from the Shannen’s Dream Campaign to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child on the occasion of Canada’s 3rd and 4th periodic reviews.
This document is a collection of letters from First Nations and non-First Nations children and youth in support of Shannen’s Dream for equitable education for all children in Canada. The report, created by the children and youth, the Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada, is dedicated to Shannen Koostachin of Attawapiskat First Nation who was an advocate for safe and comfy schools for all First Nations children. There are four sections in the report: We are First Nations Children and Youth, Letters from Children and Youth About How the Inequity in Education Affects Us, The Impact of Inequity on First Nations Children and Youth and Conclusion & Recommendations from First Nations Young People. The youth created this report with the intent of sharing it with others so that they can help by taking accountability and action for First Nations children and youth for equity in education. There is also a hope that this report will generate an undertaking by a Special Rapporteur of an “Article 45 review of the inequities faced by First Nations children in Ontario and across Canada”.
